Usdaw welcomes parliamentary debate on the issue of retail crime

Date: 08 April 2019 Shopworkers’ trade union leader Paddy Lillis welcomed David Hanson MP securing a three-hour debate this week. Recent statistics from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), the British Retail Consortium and Usdaw’s survey all reported that violence, threats and abuse against shop staff are on the increase.
Paddy Lillis Usdaw General Secretary says: The evidence from employers, both large and small, and workers themselves shows an increase in violence, threats and abuse. In light of these shocking statistics David Hanson’s debate comes at an opportune time.

“The idea that shoplifting is a victimless crime is wrong. Theft from shops is often a trigger for violence, threats and abuse against shopworkers. The rising trend in shoplifting is extremely worrying for our members.

“Usdaw continues to call for stiffer penalties for those who assault shopworkers; a simple stand-alone offence that is widely recognised and understood by the public, police, CPS, the judiciary and most importantly criminals.

“We want to see government, retailers, police and the courts working in partnership to ensure better protection for shopworkers. Retail staff are an important part of our communities; their role must be valued, respected and protected.”
