The building has been part of Belfast’s shopping district since 1787 and recently underwent refurbishment.
Usdaw’s General Secretary Paddy Lillis and Area Organiser Michala Lafferty have both been on the scene to offer their support.
“I want to pay tribute to the bravery of the Northern Ireland firefighters who put their own lives at risk to save others,” said Paddy Lillis. “Thankfully everyone was evacuated safely yesterday and no-one was hurt.
“Since news of the fire broke we have been inundated with messages of help and support from the council, different political parties and solidarity from other trade unions. It is heartening to see the generosity of the Belfast community.”
Usdaw Area Organiser Michala Lafferty said: “Our members are extremely distressed and concerned as they now enter a period of uncertainty.
“I have been in regular contact with company to offer them our full help and support.
“Today we had a constructive meeting where the company confirmed all staff will be paid up until the end of the week. Over the coming days further discussions will take place to agree what happens next week.
“The company has reassured me that the welfare and job security of the staff is their priority.”
