Promises to 'sort' the BHS pension scheme must be delivered by Sir Phillip Green says Usdaw

Date: 20 October 2016 Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw calls on Sir Phillip Green to deliver his promise to ‘sort’ the BHS pension scheme, as MPs debate the select committee report into BHS and his knighthood.

David Gill – Usdaw National Officer says: “Sir Philip Green promised to ‘sort’ the pension scheme back in June, implying that would happen soon, four months later we still don’t appear to be any further forward.

“Subsequently it was reported that he claimed to ‘have been working on this issue on a daily basis’ and today it is reported that a crunch meeting with the pension regulator to work through obstacles to a final deal is scheduled before the end of the week. The 20,000 current and future BHS pensioners need that to be a real engagement by Sir Phillip to secure their futures.

“We note that MPs have today expressed their wish for the Honours Forfeiture Committee to review Sir Phillip’s knighthood. His honour was bestowed for services to the retail industry and there is no doubt that his services to retail are now very much in question; having seen a company that traded on our high streets for over 80 years go to the wall with over 11,000 jobs lost.

“Our priority is to see Sir Phillip do the right thing and deliver on his promise to ‘sort’ the pension fund quickly, whether he does that as a knight of the realm or not is a matter for others to decide.”
